#377 | Bob McArthur | Combine Principles, Sources, and Love

Submission 377
Bob McArthur
West Hills Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (Portland, OR) 7132

What is your suggestion or idea?

I suggest keeping the existing Article 2 Principles and Sources and inserting the revised language of Love and its components. That is, combine what we currently recognize as the core of our faith with the addition of at least some of the suggested language proposed by the Commission.

What is the reason for your amendment idea?

The Seven Principles are the core of what many UUs identify as their faith. Keeping them maintains this identity. The Six Sources are also a strong statement of inclusion and respect for differences of belief and our links to other religious traditions. Moreover, the Six Sources have widely been viewed as a way to welcome those who have become dissatisfied with another faith tradition by assuring them that they will find a home in Unitarian Universalism.

Have you discussed this idea with your congregation or other UUs?

I have discussed this proposal of keeping the old and adding the new with others in our Fellowship. I have found essentially no support for the wholesale elimination of the current Seven Principles and Six Sources as proposed by the Study Commission.
