#472 | Amy Pemberton | No verbal action statements

Submission 472
Amy Pemberton
Unitarian Universalist Church of Lexington, KY

What is your suggestion or idea?

Rephrase the statements in Section C-2.2. Values and Covenant. to be value and principle focused, rather than verbal action statements.

What is the reason for your amendment idea?

The Seven Principle in the current Article II articulate clear values while leaving the actions to be taken up in response to those values to be determined by our many stakeholders. The proposed Values tell us to do certain things: honor, work, celebrate, adopt, cultivate, etc. Frankly, they read like orders and that may be part of the reason they are rubbing a lot of people the wrong way. The covenant statements just make this worse and I have already suggested that they be removed.

I realize this submission is late in the process but this is something I didn’t really see until recently - I just knew something was bugging me and it wasn’t just resistance to changing the Principles and Purposes.

Have you discussed this idea with your congregation or other UUs?

No, I just reached a point that I understood what the issue was to the point that I could even explain it to myself.
