#429 | David Culp | Change "share our values" to "support our Principles"

Submission 429
David Culp
Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax, Virginia

What is your suggestion or idea?

I suggest that one sentence in Proposed Article Section C-2.4., Inclusion, be modified.

The sentence in the Proposal currently states: ““We strive to be an association of congregations that truly
welcome all persons who share our values.””

I suggest we jettison ““all persons who share our values”” and insert something like ““all persons who support the Principles.””

What is the reason for your amendment idea?

As I said in my comments about Proposed Article Section
C-2.2., I believe turning the 7 Principles of what UUs covenant to promote into
a somehat vague statement about what ““values”” “love” consists of greatly
weakens our common bond. Promoting principles is an activity that
requires continual involvement, and is an activity that will likely never
produce a final result. Holding values is fairly passive, and doesn’t
require much commitment. And I don’t believe we can define “love”. So my suggestion conforms Proposed Article
section C-2.4. to my suggested changes to Proposed Article section C-2.2.

Have you discussed this idea with your congregation or other UUs?

My Covenant group has had good discussions about the Proposal. Generally, we all prefer the 7 Principles.
