What is the reason for your amendment idea?

All the other sections have active verbs—celebrate, work, honor, adapt. The verb in this value is “declare”—talk about doing something rather than doing it. We like the verb respect in both the first and seventh principles and think it would be a better fit here. We also think that this formulation mangles the language of the old first principle.
Have you discussed this idea with your congregation or other UUs?
Yes. We had several meetings to which all members were invited. There were nine people in attendance and this was the resulting consensus.
