#28 | Maggie Hayes | Change "which" to "that"

Submission 28
Maggie Hayes
Unitarian Universalist Church of Silver Spring

What is your suggestion or idea?

C-2.3:
Grateful for the religious ancestries we inherit and the diversity that enriches our faith, we are called to ever deepen and expand our wisdom.

What is the reason for your amendment idea?

This amendment would correct a usage error by changing ““which”” to ““that.”” ““Which”” is non-defining or nonrestrictive, whereas ““that”” is defining or restrictive. The draft uses ““that”” correctly in C-2.2 (““Love is the power that holds us together””), earlier in C-2.3 (““sacred and secular understandings that help us””), and in C-2.4 (““an association of congregations that empowers and enhances””).

Have you discussed this idea with your congregation or other UUs?

I’ve only discussed this with one other member of my church. She’s an educator with years of experience teaching students how to write with proper grammar and usage. She agrees with my suggestion.

This change was also discussed heavily in the Blue Boat Passengers group on Facebook.
