#268 | Pam Sapko | Replace "Covenant" with "Strongly Agree" or "Commit To"

Submission 268
Pam Sapko
Unitarian Congregation of West Chester (West Chester, PA) 7431

What is your suggestion or idea?

Replace the word covenant with ““strongly agree”” or ““commit to””. The word covenant is not used in daily life and always needs to be explained. It doesn’t seem welcoming.

What is the reason for your amendment idea?

For clarity of meaning.

Have you discussed this idea with your congregation or other UUs?

At our Town Hall meeting on 4/23/23, someone spoke about the history of the use of the word covenant during the time of the merger with Universalists and Unitarians. He did not present a compelling case for why it should be used now.
