#47 | Judith Barisonzi | Remove "especially...identities"

Submission 47

What is your suggestion or idea?

My proposed amendment concerns Section C-2.4, Inclusion. In the fourth sentence, I propose removing the words ““especially those with historically marginalized identities.””

What is the reason for your amendment idea?

Section C-2.4 on Inclusion states that we wish to empower and enhance everyone’s participation. Everyone means everyone. It is incompatible with this idea to set up special categories of people who are ““especially”” to be included. To do so demeans and diminishes the participation of others.

Have you discussed this idea with your congregation or other UUs?

My congregation has intensively discussed the proposed revisions to Article II. We have not yet examined specific suggestions for amendment.

Yes. And jargon is out of place in this text. Also, “identities” are not marginalized. People are.
