What is your suggestion or idea?
Amend Section C-2.4 of the Study Commission’s proposal to provide that, as in the current section on Inclusion, UU congregations truly welcome all persons, not simply “all persons who share our values” and to emphasize welcome and participation for those with historically marginalized identities. The section would read as follows (new language shown in bold italics): Systems of power, privilege, and oppression have traditionally created barriers for persons and groups with particular identities, ages, abilities, and histories. We pledge to replace such barriers with ever-widening circles of solidarity and mutual respect. We strive to be an association of congregations that truly welcome all persons who share our values. all persons. We commit to being an association of congregations that that empowers and enhances everyone’s participation. We commit to structuring congregational and associational life in ways that empower and enhance everyone’s participation, especially those with historically marginalized identities.
What is the reason for your amendment idea?
Two reasons: (1) Make it clear that, as provided in the current version of the Inclusion section in Article II, the UUA strives to be an association of congregations that truly welcome all persons, not simply all persons who share our values. (2) Indicate that there is an action commitment to structuring both association and congregational life in ways that empower and enhance everyone’s participation, especially the participation of historically marginalized people.
Have you discussed this idea with your congregation or other UUs?
The idea has been discussed at two small group meetings of members and four listening sessions on the A2SC proposal. There was strong support for changing the language in this section to clarify that we welcome all persons.
