#278 | Tom Bjorklund | Love Inappropriate as a Focal Point

Submission 278
Tom Bjorklund
Universalist Unitarian Church of Farmington (Farmington Hills, MI) 5315

What is your suggestion or idea?

““Love”” inappropriate as focal point. First, we don’t need a focal point. The Seven Principles work very well without one. We all appreciate love, sure, but we are more than that. Next point is that every major religion in the western world (Christianity, Judiasm, Islam) all profess love as their mjor tenet. If we do the same, what are we saying? Yeah, me too? What do we say to potential new members? But we really mean it? We are so much more than that. And finally, although many of us re here for some sense of love, many are here for other reasons such as a philosophical search or social justice such as reproductive or voting rights. Should those people be encouraged to leave?

What is the reason for your amendment idea?

The idea of love as a central tenet is completely misplaced.

Have you discussed this idea with your congregation or other UUs?

No, alhtough I have with a couple Christians who have pointed out the duplication.
