Submission 259 Joel Angiolillo First Parish in Wayland (Wayland, MA) 5132
What is your suggestion or idea?
Section C-2.1 Purposes is too wordy, making it less memorable, less powerful. For example, I shortened it by about 1/3 by taking out less necessary phrases.
The Unitarian Universalist Association commits
its resources to religious, educational, and humanitarian goals. Its primary
purposes are to assist congregations in their vital ministries; to train and support
leaders, both lay and professional; to foster lifelong faith formation; to heal
historic injustices; and to engage our members in the transformation of the
world through liberating love.
What is the reason for your amendment idea?
To make Article 2 easier to read and remember.
Have you discussed this idea with your congregation or other UUs?
Would you consider some version of #62 to add " “governed by democratic principles” and #59 to affirm The Association fosters freedom of belief and actively supports its members to transform their beliefs into loving actions. to read:
The purpose of the Unitarian Universalist Association is to serve the needs of the member congregations, to strengthen affiliated organizations, and to extend Unitarian Universalism to build a more sustainable, peaceable, just and equitable world. The Association supports and trains leaders both lay and professional, and serves congretations’ vital ministries which nurture lifelong faith formation and heal historic injustices. Governed by inclusive democratic principles, the UUA fosters freedom of belief and actively supports its members to transform values into loving actions.
or if this is still probably too long, just:
The purpose of the Unitarian Universalist Association is to serve the needs of the member congregations and organizations so as to build a more sustainable, peaceable, just and equitable world. Governed by inclusive democratic principles, the UUA fosters freedom of belief and actively supports its members to transform values into loving actions.
