#219 | Cynthia Landurm | Important to be Non-Creedal

Submission 219
Cynthia Landrum
First Parish Church Unitarian Universalist of Stow & Acton (Stow, MA) 5034

What is your suggestion or idea?

Delete ““the spiritual discipline of””:

Love is the power that holds us together and is at the center of our shared values. We are accountable to one another for doing the work of living our shared values through the spiritual discipline of Love.

What is the reason for your amendment idea?

While I want these values to be spiritual, it’s very important to Unitarian Universalism that we are non-creedal. Creating a central document that declares we all have a shared spiritual discipline comes close to declaring a shared theology. If we don’t declare that that love is a shared spiritual discipline, we avoid inadvertently creating the first Unitarian Universalist creed, and also bring our Humanist members and other members who might not agree with Love as a “spiritual discipline” into our Values and Covenant.

Have you discussed this idea with your congregation or other UUs?

I’ve discussed this with one colleague who pointed out her discomfort with this passage and this reason for it with me.

As hopefully a delegate I can live with this.
