2 Section C-2.1. Purposes.
3 The Unitarian Universalist Association exists to serve its member congregations and does so by [will] devoting its resources to and using its organizational
4 powers for religious, educational, and humanitarian purposes. Its primary purposes are
5 to assist congregations in their vital ministries, support and train leaders both lay and
6 professional, to foster lifelong faith formation, to heal historic and ongoing injustices, and to advance our
7 Unitarian Universalist values in the world.
8 The further purpose of the Unitarian Universalist Association is to actively engage its members in the
9 transformation of the world through liberating Love.
I agree that both historic and on-going injustices need to be included.
To address that, my congregation preferred to simplify the phrase as in our Amendment #22: “to work to heal [historic] injustices.” So in other words, if you take out the word “historic,” then by implication you are left with all injustices.
(I personally prefer “to understand and work to heal injustices.”)
Purposes amendments 14, 22 and 28 share replacing “assist” with serve in slightly different ways. There are 11 (my estimate) priority amendments for Purposes. The majority of the 8 additonal amendments focus on the description/scope of Purpose and not who is served by the scope of purpose.
Perhaps 14, 22 and 28 authors can share and anticipate friendly amendments?
Note to those who favored amendments that weren’t prioritized or presented: This forum is closing for comment tomorrow, but our lay-led public Facebook group, Blue Boat Passengers, will remain open for another few weeks for commenting (and still be viewable after that).
If you want to find people to coordinate with for the 15-congregation amendment process, you may use the group to do so while it remains open. There’s now a specific post for this in the group (“A post for those wishing to do the 15-congregation amendment process to coordinate”).
Please read both the rules and the pinned post about the pending suspension of the group before posting or commenting there.
