#457 | Mayte Alzugaray | Emphasize Fourth Principle

Submission 457
Mayte Alzugaray
Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Stony Brook

What is your suggestion or idea?

The 4th principle has been relegated to the background. It is mentioned under pluralism. I cannot say how I would rewrite the new proposed values because the organization of the new values is different than the one of the 7 principles. There is overlapping in the values, and there isn’t a value that clearly states that the responsible search for truth and meaning is one of our principles.

What is the reason for your amendment idea?

The responsible search for truth and meaning, especially truth is very important in our times. How can we do good without knowing the truth about issues or crises we are trying to solve. UUs draw from a heritage or reason and science. This should be placed more on the forefront of the new values.

Have you discussed this idea with your congregation or other UUs?

Yes, I have talked with some of the members of my congregation and they all agree that one of the main characteristics of UUs the search for truth and meaning by using reason and debate. Something that is not such a salient characteristic in other faiths, as far as I know.
