#417 | Heather Millar | Responsibilities as Individuals

Submission 417
Heather Millar
UU Church of Annapolis

What is your suggestion or idea?

Section C-2.2. Values and Covenant, page 21, Justice
Justice. We work to be diverse multicultural Beloved Communities where all thrive.
We covenant to accountably dismantle racism and all forms of systemic oppression in ourselves and our institutions. We support the use of inclusive democratic processes to make decisions.

(Note: underlined words are proposed added words.)

What is the reason for your amendment idea?

To make explicit our responsibilities as individuals to do this work.

Have you discussed this idea with your congregation or other UUs?

I have consulted with others in our congregation who are active in our 8th Principle implementation work and with ministers.

What does “systemic oppression in ourselves” even mean? That makes no sense and is an oxymoronic phrase.

And why would we want to include terms and phrases that not only are the latest fad academic jargon that will be out of fashion within three years, but that actually make no sense? That it is elitist academic insider jargon is bad enough.
