#50 | Robin Bossert | Replace Pluralism with Democracy

Submission 50
Robin Bossert
First Unitarian Congregational Society in Brooklyn (Brooklyn, NY) 6211

What is your suggestion or idea?

We support the use of inclusive democratic processes to make decisions.
Replace with: Representative governance through the democratic process in our congregations, our association and the world at large is essential for justice to prevail.

What is the reason for your amendment idea?

With democracy in retreat around the world and the prevalence of the oxymoron ““non-completive”” elections in our congregations and the UUA, including this year’s Presidential appointment, we are losing a foundational value that distinguishes us from all hierarchical denominations.

I believe Democracy should be one of the 6 main words replacing Pluralism or one of the other words that are redundant. Democracy is too important and people do not understand what will happen when it is gone.

Have you discussed this idea with your congregation or other UUs?

As Co-President of the Board at First U Brooklyn, I have discussed this with the Board and numerous congregants and committees . As a present Deacon and past Board member at All Souls NYC, I have discussed this with Board members, governance committees and many UU’s.

I am in total agreement with this, for the reasons described.
